Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools
Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools
Enki Journal for Humanities and Social Sciences recognises that generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as large language models and image generators, have become part of the research and writing environment. This policy is intended to protect originality, integrity and confidentiality when such tools are used. It is consistent with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and will be updated as professional practice develops.
1. Authors
- AI tools may not be listed as an author or co-author. Authorship carries scholarly and legal responsibility that only people can assume.
- Authors are fully responsible for the content of their work, including the accuracy of information and conclusions, the proper use of citations and references, and the absence of plagiarism and of fabricated or misleading material.
- All references, quotations and data suggested by AI tools must be verified, since such tools may produce non-existent sources or inaccurate text.
- Authors must disclose any use of AI tools to generate text or ideas, analyse data, translate, or prepare figures, in a clear statement placed before the reference list or in the first footnote, naming the tool, its version and the purpose of use. Disclosure is not required for ordinary spelling and grammar checkers or for searching databases.
- Images, figures or tables generated by AI tools may not be presented as research data or evidence, and AI tools may not be used to fabricate data, results or quotations.
- Authors should not upload personal or sensitive data, or copyrighted material, to AI tools without permission.
2. Reviewers
- A manuscript sent for review is a confidential document. Reviewers must not upload the manuscript, parts of it, or their detailed comments on it to public or external AI tools.
- Reviewers may not rely on AI tools to prepare the scholarly evaluation or to reach a judgement on the manuscript; the evaluation is the reviewer's personal responsibility. A tool may be used solely to improve the wording of the reviewer's own report, provided no material from the manuscript is entered into it.
3. Editors
- The editorial team treats submissions as strictly confidential and does not upload them to public AI tools.
- Editorial decisions are made by people. No decision to accept or reject is based solely on the output of automated detection tools, whether for plagiarism or for AI-generated text; such output is treated as an indicator subject to human judgement and to the author's response.
4. Breaches of this Policy
Failing to disclose AI use where disclosure is required, fabricating references or data with AI tools, or uploading confidential material to them is a breach of publication ethics. Cases are handled under the journal's procedure for allegations of academic misconduct and may lead to rejection or retraction in accordance with the Corrections and Retractions Policy.
