Abstract

The most prominent sociological dimensions in the legacy of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) manifest in his advice to Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan to mint a distinct currency for the Islamic lands, aimed at competing with Roman coins in economic transactions and ensuring independence from them. Furthermore, as conflicting cultural currents fractured the Islamic nation—leaving society under the heavy strain of Shu'ubiyya (anti-Arab factionalism)—Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) established specialized circles for sciences and Quranic recitations in the Prophet's Mosque. This initiative fortified pure Islamic values and strengthened the social bonds among Muslims, as people became imbued with spiritual energy derived from knowledge and ethics. This flowing energy, stemming from supplications, anchors Muslims against the allurements of worldly temptations, desires, and pleasures.

Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) embodies the model of a social reformer devoted to his Lord. He would bind a stone over his stomach out of hunger, following the example of his grandfather, the Prophet (upon him and his family be the best prayers and purest peace). Such is the path of reformers who wish to rectify their societies; they begin with themselves so that others may follow their example.

Perhaps the most prominent hallmark of a social reformer is the call to life, in stark contrast to political despots who call to death and sow fear among the people. The supplications of this Imam (peace be upon him) overflowed with everything that reinforces the pillars of society through bonds of love, piety, righteousness, and asceticism. Using a descriptive-analytical methodology, this paper aims to examine the various levels of sociological dimensions contained within Al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya.
